epl Creative Garage

Creative Garage

Invent – Design – Build – Test

Developing tangible solutions, not just ideas, and seeking to remain active throughout the lifecycle of student-driven innovation processes, we have launched epl Creative Garage.

Our innovation lab encompasses an array of offerings to foster lifelong learning—coding, Design Thinking, animation, 3D printing, robotics, among others—designed to create new and different thinking, creativity and problem solving in learners and professionals.

Seeking to help unlock the future, the lab is serving as a hub to stimulate creativity, guide discussions, moderate collaboration as well as develop prototypes and experiment with solutions.

Below is a list of all the Creative Garage workshops that we are currently offering. The workshops are arranged by the suggested age of the participants. All Creative Garage workshops are offered both in English and Spanish.

Electro Kids 3 to 5 years old

In this workshop, children will learn about the basic elements (batteries, LEDs, and conductive materials) and types of circuits, while building their own circuits. Next, we’ll introduce them to LittleBits, an electronic building blocks system that snaps together magnetically. They’ll explore different modules like sensors, motors, switches, and LEDs, and use them to create their own inventions. They will learn how to use Makey Makey (an invention kit that turns everyday objects into touchpads and keyboards) in combination with conductive materials to create interactive games and objects. We’ll also teach them basic programming concepts using Scratch Jr., a simple and intuitive visual programming language. They’ll learn how to create their own animations and interactive stories, and then use those skills to program robots from robotic kids that we use in our maker space.

Little Inventors 7 to 9 years old

In Little Inventors we will inspire your child’s creativity and imagination, giving them the chance to explore a wide range of technologies. They’ll learn how to construct simple and complex electronic circuits. They’ll also learn about different types of circuits, such as parallel and series circuits. Using Scratch (a user-friendly and intuitive visual programming language), the kids will learn how to code their own interactive stories, animations, and games. After starting to learn about programming, they will start working with technologies as Circuit Playground (circuit board with a variety of sensors, lights, and switches) and Microbit (small programmable computer) to create a wide range of projects.

Creative Makers 10 to 12 years old

At Creative Makers, students explore technological tools that allow them to develop projects of their own design. They’ll take their programming skills to the next level as they learn to use the advanced features of the Microbit, including Bluetooth connectivity, sensors, and more. With more advanced programming knowledge, they will use the Makecode Arcade platform to design and build their own video games. They’ll explore the Hummingbird Kit, a powerful platform for building and programming robots, prototypes, and other interactive projects. We will aso teach them how to use 3D modeling software to create complex designs, which they’ll then print using 3D printers.

Design Thinking 12 years old +

Design Thinking is an innovative methodology that seeks to create solutions through empathy while focusing on people’s needs. It involves a 5 step process, created by Stanford University, to prototype and test the designed solutions. This methodology has been an excellent differentiator in our students’ lives and in their college application processes.
